Arequipa is the city of sillar (white stone), with destinations such as glaciers, volcanoes like Misti, deep canyons like the Cotahuasi and Colca, a renowned gastronomy, coves and beaches.

Nestled between the coast and the southern highlands of Peru to the Andes. It contains the snowy peak Ampato (6,288 m), Chachani (6,075 m) and Misti (5,825 m).
Extension: 63 345 km2.

Attractions in the city

Cathedral of Arequipa Museum
Visiting Hours: Temple: L S 7:00 to 10:00 and 17:00 to 19:00 hours. Museum: L S 10:00 to 16:20 hours.
Location: Located next to the Plaza de Armas.

One of the first seventeenth century religious monuments in the city. It was built in ashlar (volcanic stone), neoclassical style. Preserves invaluable objects brought as a pulpit from Lille - France; and a Belgian monumental body of 15 meters high.

Church and Complex of the Company
Visiting hours: Church: Monday - Friday 09:10 - 13:00. Join Free.
Location: Intersection of Calle General Morán and Alvarez Thomas, Plaza de Armas of Arequipa.

Set of buildings erected by the Jesuits for religious and living purposes. The buildings form a, say many, the most beautiful representative monument of religious architecture of the seventeenth century (1660). In the middle stands the temple assembly. It houses more than 60 paintings from the Cusco School from such artists as Bernardo Bitti and Diego de la Puente.

Attractions out of town

Sabandia (Arequipa)
Visiting hours: visiting El Molino Monday - Sunday from 9:00 to 17:00.
Location: 8 km south of the city of Arequipa (20 minutes by car).

Traditional village with a special landscape, surrounded by spacious terraces and three volcanoes, Misti, Chachani and Pichu Pichu. Some of the houses still retain features of colonial or Republican pattern of the nineteenth century. It has built a recreational complex with two pools that use the cold waters of the springs that surround the area.

Yanahuara (Arequipa)
Visiting hours: At any time of day.
Location: 2 Km from the center of the city of Arequipa (6 minutes by car).

Built in the nineteenth century, it consists of a series of arcs of ashlar in which are recorded the words of famous Arequipa. From here the visitor has a privileged view of the city and the Misti volcano. On Easter Sunday, the square sets the mood for the traditional burning of Judas, which involves burning a doll that is represented by a current character of society, whose work is disapproved by the population.


Volcano Misti (Arequipa)
Visiting hours: Entering Monday - Sunday.
Location: 20 km northeast of the city of Arequipa, you reach the volcano (1 hour by 4x4).

El Misti with its 5,825 meters. is the tutelary image of the city. From the top of its summit you can see the city of Arequipa, the Chili River valley and the Chachani and Pichu Pichu volcanoes.


Sumbay Caves - Rock Art (Arequipa)
Visiting hours: At any time of day.
Location: 85 Km north of the city of Arequipa on the
road to Caylloma (1 hour 45 minutes by bus).

They are within the limits of the National Reserve Salinas and Aguada Blanca, home to more than 500 figures of rock art. These representations, possibly made by the first inhabitants of the area, have a length of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 years.

Virgen de Chapi (Arequipa)

Pilgrimage crossing the Arequipa desert to worship the Virgin of Purification or Virgin of Chapi. The pilgrims carry stones of different size with forming apachetas calls, symbolizing the sins of the devotees. In the evenings, is sailing with lots of candles image of the miraculous Virgin leave in procession. There are also fireworks displays, and viands típicas.Ubicación offered: Chapi (2.420 meters above sea level). Arequipa.AccesosVía land: Chapi, 87 km southeast of Arequipa. It is accessible by bus but some pilgrims prefer to walk (3 hours walk from the area about 7 Toldos).

Anniversary of the city of Arequipa (Arequipa)

To celebrate the International Fair of Arequipa (located in the Cerro Juli), handicraft exhibitions in the Fundo El Fierro, the Dance Festival-Festidanza are made. The main day, on August 15 a Friendship Parade through the city.





THE WEATHER
               

The climate of Arequipa is generally mild and dry, that like many arequi as it does not get to have very cold winters or harsh summers of pure heat, tempera usually does not rise above 25 degrees Celsius and is also rare to lower 10 degrees Celsius.
